Computer Lessons for Seniors

Computer Lessons for Seniors Computer Lessons for Seniors: Does it Compute? ChaptersWhat the Best Computer Classes DeliverTake Private Tutorials to Learn about ITIT Tutorials for Keeping in ContactFree Computer Courses and Lessons on the Web!IT Courses OnlineOther Resources for Seniors wanting to Learn about ITIn the last five years, older age groups have increasingly started using the internet. However, with over 4 million over-65s in the UK having never used the internet, the majority of senior citizens lack the basic computer skills that are commonplace in the modern age. While it’s the one of the most important things of the 21st century, the internet is largely (and wrongly) considered a young person’s tool. It can be very difficult to encourage the older generations to learn basic computer skills and even harder to teach them to become IT technicians through  IT courses.  This mindset has resulted in many brands and developers largely ignoring older potential customers because they believe they lack digital literacy. While mobility can be an issue in the real world, it’s almost non-existent on the web once you've learnt the internet basics. After you take a few computer classes and learn how to use a mouse and keyboard, you'll find that staying in contact with family members has never been so easy. You can even order your groceries online and have them all delivered to your home with just a few clicks of the mouse. Let’s not forget that there are also apps to keep your brain active. Some members of the older generation remain reluctant to take IT tutorials and learn more about computers in general in part because they can’t really see the benefits immediately.Superprof now explains other reasons for seniors' reluctance to take on the keyboard has some advice for those who’d like to learn some computer basics in a fun and enjoyable way!And they didn’t predict those giants of social media by name but the implication was clear in the text that people would become more isolated, the more information technology became avail able to the mainstream public. Thus, when proposing computer classes for seniors, one must remember the massive changes in the workplace and in social values they’ve seen during their lifetime.Think about this: gossiping at the backyard fence was an act to be scorned and any nugget of information learned at that proverbial fence was usually met with derision and disbelief. These days, we must constantly debate what is real news â€" news with actual value, especially seeing as news travels so very fast thanks to our personal communications devices.Another aspect of the culture in days gone by that has met its demise: keeping one’s dirty laundry hidden.Take a moment to think of the #MeToo movement.Indeed, bad behaviours should be stopped in their tracks and abusers should be disabled from perpetrating more abuse. But how could anyone foresee the very public airing of what, even 30 years ago, would have been such a taboo, private subject as a sexual encounter? In that sense, the use o f social media represents a breach of fundamental social mores to people who, in the ‘70s, were young adults whose social values were already deeply ingrained.Seen in that light, it is easy to reason older generations' disdain and perhaps outright dislike of social media. That is why we've got to help them see the better aspects of such instant communication! Staying in touch with friends and family, sharing precious moments, helping someone in need...The saying ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ has absolutely no weight when it comes to seniors learning something new.It is the conventions they’ve lived by all of their lives that must be overcome if one hopes to successfully indoctrinate seniors into the pervasive world of information technology. Some of the most successful courses in the UK, whose instructors have mastered the art of putting their Golden students in the right frame of mind for learning all about software, computer applications and how to use them are included in this table.Computer lessons around the UK:School / Organisation NameWhat They OfferWhere They're AtPhone NumberAge UKBasic computer training Software usage Getting onlineLocations all over the UK0800 678 1174Online Centres NetworkComputer classes to students of all agesLocations all over the UK0114 349 1666Senior Computer MomentsComprehensive computer training and supportDorset, Sommerset, Wiltshire01258 870053 01747 450078 07788 181419 (mobile)Night CoursesFile management, intro to the Internet, Introduction to email, Introduction to MS Word and ExcelSelect cities in Ireland3531 531 1280Your Local Community CentreA multitude of literacy courses including digital literacyAll over the UKplease see your local community centreTake Private Tutorials to Learn about ITThis is probably the best method for teaching older generations about computing in a fun and enjoyable way. There’s nothing better than meeting an IT expert face-to-face (whether they’re an IT master’s stud ent, IT technician, or developer) in order to learn more about their subject. If you feel like you’re constantly repeating yourself when telling your grandparents how to use their computer, it’s probably because you’re not an experienced teacher or you gloss over steps that are obvious to you but not them. Private IT tutors have the necessary basic skills of teaching to ensure everything goes in.It’s also much easier to learn something when you know what your learning objectives are. A good number of the older generation often hear things like:“You won’t get it”, “you’re too old to learn about computers”, or “IT isn’t really for your generation”.You're never too old to learn. If you get stuck, you can always get a private tutor. (Source: pixabay.com)This couldn’t be further from the truth. The older generations are just as capable as the younger ones when it comes to learning about IT and saying things like this only serves to discourage them. Thanks to pri vate IT tutorials, a quality tutor can catch them up with computers and adapt their sessions to their learning style. They can go over the basics that are so obvious to those who grew up with computers (right click, double click, download, save, etc.).While there may be a generational gap between the baby boomers who are mainly retired and millennials who’ve grown up with computers, computing could be a great way to bring the two generations closer together. There are several different types of class for IT beginners:Introduction to IT tutorials where they can learn to type, save documents, etc.Improving their knowledge of computers (processors, hard disks, peripherals, app development) with IT courses.Training for specific programmes (word processors, spreadsheets, powerpoints, etc.)Help creating their own websitesDigital culture trainingGet to know your computer. (Source: stock.tookapic.com)If this is of interest to you, why not consider offering tutorials over webcam? It’s a g ood way to help those who might otherwise struggle to get out of the house to attend classes. It’s far more useful to them than a book full of jargon they’ll never understand. For those who are really keen to learn more about IT, why not offer classes in programming or coding for websites? You’ll be surprised at how quickly old dogs can learn new tricks! There is no age requirement for learning how to troubleshoot and maintain computers! Source: Pixabay Credit: AnncaIT Courses OnlineOnce your dear Senior has taken a computer class and mastered how to use their computer, they would know how to access the Internet. How about putting that newfound knowledge to work by directing them to online courses?MOOCs - massive online open courses are non-degree classes held strictly online where participants â€" often numbering in the thousands, collaborate in their learning. This class structure permits students to learn about any subject they desire (provided it is offered) at their own pace. They are generally free, although some courses do offer a certificate of training for a small fee â€" a much smaller fee than attending a traditional higher learning or continuing education class!Coursera has been consistently voted one of the top providers of online classes. Working in concert with universities around the world, they offer classes in just about everything from archaeology to algorithms and data processing to deep learning for artificial intelligence.Just now, their website is promoting a Python for Everybody course and a Programming Basics module!  No, they're not giving every student a python; they are teaching a programming language.  Coursera’s top competitor, Future Learn, also has an expanded course catalogue.Rather than a presentation of what they have on offer at any given time, their home page invites you to search for what you want to learn about... and there’s a good chance they would have a class on it!Just now, as a case in point on our topic of IT lessons, they are offering a 3-week course in cyber security (hosted by Newcastle University), a 2-week class called Digital Skills (to learn all about mobile design and development), and yet another: Introduction to Digital Media Analytics.Other highly rated MOOCs are:UdacityIversityCognitive ClassedXA web browser search of any of those names would bring up a link to those pages. From there, a simple scan of their individual course lists, followed by selecting the one that sounds the most intriguing... and, next thing you know, your beloved seniors are happily exchanging ideas and information with the other students in their classes! And they’re not limited to learning about IT, either!Perhaps the best thing about online learning is that there is no bias, implicit or otherwise. When seniors log in to their classes, they are a student with the same drives (pardon the pun!) and capabilities as everyone else. With the degree of anonymity afforded online, neither their teacher nor cla ssmates will have any idea that this person in their class is a grandmother or grandfather; they talk down to them or try to simplify anything. Older students are simply one of the masses and will be addressed that way. That is perhaps the kindest and most productive way to accord a learner, regardless of age, the respect s/he deserves!Other Resources for Seniors wanting to Learn about ITThere are plenty of organisations whose mission is to help seniors improve their computing skills by offering:IT lessonsHelp with creating CVs and looking for work (a lot of seniors struggle to find work because they lack the necessary IT skills required).Help with creating websitesLessons on how to use modern communication devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. These organisations aim to alleviate the effect of digital exclusion whereby older generations have little or no access to modern technologies nor the ability to use them.In addition to the programmes designed for the elderly, ther e are also websites with lessons to help them learn more about computers and even programmes to simplify computers for first-time users. Here are some examples of the different things they could learn about:  â€œComputer maintenance tasks”, “using a USB key or external hard drive”, “using computers, tablets, or smartphones for beginners”, or even “using Linux”.When you learn to use computers, you should also learn to use tablets and smartphone. (Source: kaboompics.com)The site Skillfull Senior, for example, teaches the older generation the basics of using their computer and includes animated tutorials showing them how to do things like:Holding the mouseErgonomics so that they can use their computer without causing unnecessary physical pain.In addition to the animations, the tutorials also include a voiceover so that they can listen to what they have to do.There are also plenty of IT Training courses for the elderly run by Age UK so that they can start using the internet .There’s also Barclays Bank’s Digital Eagles programme which includes online training sessions or in-branch sessions. There are plenty of different sessions depending on which IT skills they’re wanting to learn. For example, with Barclays Bank’s Digital Eagles, you can learn fundamental skills such as:Setting up an email accountDoing your shopping onlineSearching the internet safelyHow to stay safe onlineUsing YouTubeUsing SkypeIt should be remembered that seniors learn to use the internet as a useful tool rather than a source of fun like the younger generations tend to. Hopefully this information has been useful in helping you either plan IT tutorials for the elderly or has given you some useful information for helping seniors learn more about computing.Or, even better: it has inspired to to take computer programming courses yourself!

Guitar Arpeggios What They Are, and How to Nail Them.

Guitar Arpeggios What They Are, and How to Nail Them. Raise Your Guitar Game with Arpeggios. ChaptersWhat are Arpeggios? Why Play Arpeggios for Rhythm Guitar? How to Play Arpeggios for Rhythm GuitarUsing Arpeggios for Lead Guitar.Advice to Improve Your ArpeggiosIf you want to get better at guitar and one day play classics like Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven - or the famous slow rock Still Loving You by Scorpions - you need to work on one guitar technique in particular: arpeggios. But how do you get started? Are there guitar tutorials? What are the basics you need to know before you start to learn guitar? These things are essential for knowing how to play the guitar - for both rhythm guitar and for guitar solos, for music theory and for guitar practice.Arpeggios are a basic guitar technique and one of the first things you should learn as you begin to play.Lots of musicians use them, whether they’re playing rock, hard-rock (Slash), blues (Clapton) or jazz guitar.Arpeggios are one of those tools that are great for jamming and improvising, because they consist of taking the no tes of a chord and playing them separately. So, rather than taking a guitar chord as played altogether, arpeggios all you to play the notes at different times.Whilst this helps you to practice, and understand, your guitar chords, it's more than that too.A Bit of TheoryArpeggios are intimately linked to learning your guitar chords and they are often taught along with the chords themselves. This is particularly true of music theory, in which you are tested, for ear training, on the sound of the major scale - say the C major - and the harmonic structure of the corresponding chord shapes. These arpeggios are the basis of many melodies - including those of your favorite songs - so they are worth learning. If you want to improve your guitar playing technique, the arpeggio of a chord contains the same notes as the chord. Knowing the notes of the chord is a key part of playing its arpeggio. The base note of the chord will normally become the tonic note of the arpeggio. However, there are as ma ny variations of an arpeggio as there are notes in a chord. There are two different types of chords - major and minor. A minor chord has a root or base note, minor third, and perfect fifth, while a major chord has a root, major third, and a perfect fifth. So for either triad, an arpeggio would begin with the base note, followed by the third and then the fifth. For example, in G major the dominant note is G, and it would be followed by B and D.Master the art of fingerpicking with arpeggios. Why Play Arpeggios for Rhythm Guitar?Arpeggios can sometimes be considered finger picking, since it’s a method that consists of playing the strings of your guitar one by one, instead of playing them all at once.  This is a soothing style that is great as a backdrop to singing, as the melody will stay soft and soothing.Specifically, here, we are using this style of guitar for rhythm guitar - i.e. to accompany a voice or another instrument.Knowing how to play arpeggios means that you can play many dif ferent chords and tab sets. Arpeggios complement the other combinations of notes and sounds with their melodious and harmonious background - but without giving that heaviness that strumming would give the piece. In popular guitar music, you can’t really just play arpeggios on their own. Playing arpeggios is a great exercise to practice your guitar, but it may quickly become boring for you and your audience if they aren’t accompanied by other instruments, rhythms, or a singer. But they also may well not. In classical guitar music, whole pieces can be made of arpeggios, and there is nothing boring about it at all. Arpeggios allow you to play very complex chord progressions - that are incredibly interesting to listen to. Check out Bach's Cello Suites for some incredible uses of arpeggios.Arpeggios are often recommended to beginners as an exercise because they help to build up your experience playing guitar and help you to learn more about the instrument and the chromatic and melodic structure of the fretboard. Two Styles of Playing ArpeggiosThere are two different styles of playing arpeggios on your guitar - the vertical and the diagonal method. In the vertical method you play one or two notes per string.  In the diagonal method, you play at least two notes per string, which allows you to play arpeggios based on 4 note chords. Why Play Arpeggios? The loops in arpeggios are repetitive patterns on the neck of the guitar. This is great for any guitar player to practice their technique.Playing arpeggios will help you play faster and more precisely in general - the speed of your playing is very important because each note is played back and forth in a range that goes up and down.Your fingers will become quicker and more agile - think of the amazing Django Reinhardt who played arpeggios with only two fingers! With or Without a PickOften people use a pick to play guitar. However, arpeggios can easily be played with your fingers - in what we refer to as 'fingerstyle'.Each m ethod has its advantages and disadvantages. Playing with a pick will give you more control as you pick strings - however, it is a technique for higher skill levels to cross strings whilst picking quickly. Playing with your fingers will allow you to go faster - as you can cross strings naturally. There’s also the option of using a long fingernail - you’ll get a sound close to that of a pick, but with your fingers. It’s all about using the thumb of your right hand to play the three bass strings - E, A, and D.The nice thing about chords is that you can learn the arpeggios easily too!Next, place each finger on a string.Put your index finger on GMiddle finger on BAnd ring finger on E.Each finger goes in a specific order, and it will be numbered on the guitar tabs:1 for your index finger2 for the middle finger3 for the ring fingerand 4 for your pinky. The Position of Your HandTo gain flexibility and avoid a cramp, the position of your wrist is crucial.  It should be slightly bent, so t hat it almost makes a right angle from your forearm.  However, make sure that you don’t exaggerate the bend; the shape should stay natural.Using Arpeggios for Lead Guitar.By breaking down the chords and learning them as arpeggios, it’ll be easier for you to learn the chords, point blank. However, there is another way to use your arpeggios. Working on arpeggios will help your improve your jamming and composition. During an arpeggio you’re just playing up and down a sole chord, which is a great way to frame your guitar solos - but you don't have to use these arpeggio shapes as whole units. To explain this better, let's have a brief look at the theory of soloing. What is a Guitar Solo? and How is it Relevant to Arpeggios? If you want to play jazz guitar, or blues guitar, you're going to need to learn how to solo and how to improvise. This will come in handy in rock guitar songs too - but most guitar teachers teach it through jazz.We know that you are beginner guitar player, and might not really yet know how to play guitar. However, this stuff, although a little complex, is dead important. When guitar players solo, what are they doing? Just playing random notes? Or is there something special going on here?Every jazz standard, or famous blues song, is based around a chord progression, in which major chords, minor chords, and every other sort of chord that's used follows sequential chord changes. If the piece is in the key of C, say, this C will be the root note of the piece. Now, a C chord is made up of C, E, and G. (The same is true of the C major arpeggio, obviously.) So, when the rhythm section of the jazz band plays a C major chord, the soloist knows that any of the notes C, E, or G will sound nice over the top of this chord. If the soloist plays a C#, however, he might have hit a wrong note. But the C chord will ultimately change (because the best guitar songs or jazz standards ain't gonna stay on the same chord the whole way). Say it moves to E. The notes of t he E arpeggio are E, G#, and B. Now, we have to play some different notes over the top (because playing a G - as you would over a C chord - might sound a little strange).Throughout all these different chord changes, a good guitarist will be able to play notes that make sense in their solos. This happens by learning the arpeggios and turning them into interesting melodic lines that, in the guitar world, we call 'guitar licks' or just 'licks'.If you are serious about soloing, you will need to learn some scales - the pentatonic, the harmonic minor, the blues scale, the mixolydian, if you are feeling out there - as well as the chords that these can be played above. However, the arpeggios provide an incredibly easy way to remember these, as the arpeggios are halfway between a chord - any chords, from jazz chords to open chords, to barre chords - and its corresponding scale.Working on an ArpeggioThere are plenty of ways to practice arpeggios - and if you take a guitar lesson, you will def initely learn more. But here we want to suggest some ways to incorporate your arpeggios into your jazz or blues licks. These are best done when you have the basics of arpeggios down a little.Arpeggios, if you play just three of the notes together, are known as triads. These are like the bare bones of the chord. Try it. You need to make sure you only have one note on each string.Once you have an arpeggio down, try and find different places on the fingerboard where you can play the same arpeggio. So, for the C major arpeggio, where else can you play that?Don’t hesitate to work on both major and minor chords. And, when you are ready, and a seventh in their too.Extended arpeggios - another way to play an arpeggio is to do them all the way up and down your guitar neck. This means that you are not only playing the basic triad, but are stringing a long line of notes, repeating the arpeggio across different octaves.Use all of these elements to develop your guitar techniques. When you pract ice all this stuff, you'llll improve your dexterity and comfort in the whole range on your guitar, and it will help you prepare for improvisation.Advice to Improve Your ArpeggiosJust like anything else, learning arpeggios will take some training, practice, and patience. Whilst they are, in some respects, a basic guitar technique, they are also used in some of the most outrageously complex guitar tricks there are.Teach YourselfYou can easily teach yourself arpeggios by following online guitar tutorials on your computer or tablet. You can find free online guitar lessons on YouTube, for example.Learn Arpeggios with a TeacherAlternatively, you could sign up for private guitar lessons with a qualified teacher. Classes will take place at home over a set period and your instructor can walk you through arpeggios and all the main major, minor, and major seventh chords - either in fingerpicking accompaniment or for soloing. If you’re trying to find a guitar class, get in touch with a local m usic store or check out noticeboards in supermarkets and post offices - there’ll often be ads posted by professionals offering private guitar lessons. A guitar course is a great thing to do, because alongside arpeggios, you will learn all sorts of things from power chords to vibrato to the pentatonic scale.Nail those arpeggios with a guitar teacher. The advantage of taking private guitar lessons is that you can avoid picking up any bad habits and learn the proper way to sit and hold yourself. For acoustic guitars or electric guitars, it's a really excellent way to ensure that you make the most out of your new guitar.A teacher can give you advice and appropriate exercises that will help you gain the dexterity and speed you need to master arpeggios. You can also find other free guitar tutorials (like this article!).Searching for guitar lessons London produces the most results on Superprof. But there is a lot more choice if you're willing to learn online.A last bit of advice:To succee d at arpeggios, here are a few final tips:In accompaniment, work on the articulation of your thumb and fingers to gain agility and speed.Don’t jump in at the deep end, but begin with easy guitar pieces and gradually increase in difficulty.Don’t hesitate to play with a metronome to help regulate your rhythm. At the beginning, you may have to slow down songs to learn them, and then gradually increase your speed to 100%. It's a good way to learn to play songs because it ensures you get your technique right.Don’t limit yourself to just one piece of music - make sure you’re working on a few different pieces and styles of music so that you can really learn all of the different subtleties of arpeggios.Don’t struggle to find time to play - make sure you’re practicing regularly. Just 10 or 15 minutes a day is better than 2 hours all at once at the weekend. An ideal breakdown might be spending 5-10 minutes working on your range and technique and then 10 to 15 minutes working on you r pieces. And finally, stay motivated and keep playing guitar! For bass guitar lessons, see here.

What is it Like to Attend University of California, Irvine

What is it Like to Attend University of California, Irvine The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Nikhita is a Los Angeles tutor specializing in Algebra tutoring, Pre-Calculus tutoring, Chemistry tutoring, and more. She is a senior at University of California, Irvine majoring in Biological Sciences. See what she had to say about her school: VT:Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Nikhita: UC Irvine is set in the middle of a very suburban town, but the university is very different from the city itself. My experiences of growing up in Irvine were much different from my experiences going to college there. The campus itself is shaped like a circle, making it very accessible, even without a car or a bike. Additionally, having a car or bike is sometimes more of a hassle because its tough to use it around campus. There are shuttle buses available from all the housing communities and around the campus itself, so a car is not necessary. The campus itself is beautifulall of the buildings are built around a giant park. Because the weather is wonderful, there are always students studying, taking naps, or playing sports in the park, creating a very welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Irvine is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in America and UC Irvine embodies that spirit as well. There are lots of measures in place to ensure students feel safe on or around c ampus. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Nikhita: Because the lectures are relatively large, it is sometimes hard for students to approach them during class. However, professors are always open for questions before, after, and during the lecture. Additionally, they all have office hours which students take advantage of in order to get to know them better. Academic advisors are always available in their offices, by walk-in or by appointment. Teaching assistants teach discussion sections which are much smaller than lectures (usually around 20 people) and also hold their own office hours so students can get all of their questions answered. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Nikhita: UC Irvines freshman dorms are located on campus, making the longest walk from your room to your class 15 minutes. The rooms themselves are very spacious and come with a lot of furniture already in it. There are three dining halls on campus and many restaurants and cafes available. The housing communities host multiple social events, as does each particular hall. Most people make a majority of their friends through their freshman dorm life (myself included) and it was definitely a worthwhile experience! VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Nikhita: UC Irvine has a lot of unique programs and majors available, but the most common major is Biological Sciences. I am a Biological Sciences major and hope to go into the healthcare field, as do most Science majors at UC Irvine. The university knows this and does a really good job supporting the Biology program and specifically tailors the requirements to meet those of pre-professional schools. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Nikhita: Dorm life really helped me make friends as a freshman. I met a lot of amazing people whom Im still friends with. Additionally, getting involved on campus is a major asset. The more organizations you are involved with, the more different types of people you meet. Although the campus is large and may seem intimidating, getting involved in smaller organizations will help you meet a lot of wonderful people. Greek life is fairly predominant on campus but a lot of people are not affiliated. You can definitely still have a social life even if you arent in a sorority or fraternity. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Nikhita: UC Irvine has a great career website, called ZotLink, which hosts hundreds of thousands of job opportunities available for students. I found multiple opportunities on there, including internships, part-time jobs, and full-time jobs, which have helped me grow as a person. Additionally, there are quarterly career and graduate program fairs which help students get exposure to reputable companies and programs. The Career Center also hosts daily workshops and seminars to help students figure out their interests or find programs that will help them achieve their goals. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Nikhita: UC Irvine has two libraries, a huge student center, and study rooms in every dorm suite. There are ample study rooms and independent study areas, but they do tend to get busy during finals week. However, if you want a study room, just make sure to reserve one ahead of time and you shouldnt have any problems. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Nikhita: Irvine itself is a suburban area but it has many malls, movie theaters, and shopping complexes. Additionally, its central location means it is only ten minutes away from the beach, an hour from the mountains, an hour from Los Angeles, and an hour from San Diego. It is also only four hours from Las Vegas. Because of its location, it can be fun, especially if you know someone with a car. If not, there are also a lot of shopping complexes and a movie theater around campus, and UC Irvine hosts a lot of concerts and social evens itself. Most students stay near campus their first year and then when they get a car, they start venturing off to other locations. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Nikhita: UC Irvine is home to a total of 25,000 students. Therefore, the lower-division class sizes are pretty big (between 200-400 people) but there are also smaller discussion sections with only twenty people. Therefore, it does require extra effort on the students part to make the most of their education and the opportunities they have, but it is very easy to get used to the sizes. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Nikhita: I recently took a Biochemistry class with a very difficult professor. He required students to think a lot and apply the concepts that we learned in what was already a difficult subject. Looking back, although I had to work very hard to do well, the class taught me a lot about the value of getting an education that teaches you skills that you can use later on. College doesnt only teach you facts about the classes youre taking, but also teaches you how to study, how to break out of your comfort zone, and how to enjoy and take control of your own life. Guitar Basics Why is Technique Important

Guitar Basics Why is Technique Important Suzy S. New to the guitar? Getting the basics down including proper positioning and guitar technique is important from the very start. Here, Lowell, IN teacher Blake C.  explains   Over the years, many experienced guitarists have arrived at my studio doorstep asking for help to improve their playing. These guitarists didn’t understand why they were struggling, and merely thought they were stuck in some sort of a slump. However, the slump that these guitarists suffered was not caused by a lack of musical desire or passion or some other emotional hang-up; poor guitar technique led to their difficulties. Correcting poor technique is often more difficult than learning proper technique as a beginner. Of course, students can learn guitar basics first, but even the basics are difficult without proper technique. Therefore, it’s a better idea to avoid developing poor guitar technique; instead, study proper guitar technique with a quality instructor who can assist you with learning guitar the right way the first time. How Do I Know If I Am Using Incorrect Technique? The simplest way is to set-up an in-person or  online video lesson to have your technique reviewed by a professional instructor here at Takelessons.com. If you absolutely cannot take advantage of an instructional session with a Takelessons  instructor, below are a few ideas to improve your current technique and  guitar playing. How Do I Identify Guitar Technique Flaws? Video recording is a good option, but an even better alternative is a bit lower-tech and used at most music conservatories. First, locate or purchase a dressing mirror â€" these can be purchased for $9 or $10 at most local dollar or general merchandise stores. Next, locate or purchase a footstool â€" these can be purchased for approximately $12. Finally, locate or purchase a good practice chair â€" adjustable piano benches are available for about $30. Set Up Your Practice Area   To begin, the footstool is for your left foot if you play guitar right-handed.   For left-handed guitarists, use the footstool for your right foot.   Next, place the mirror directly across from you, setting it up so you can see your hands. Once the mirror is in place, get into a proper sitting position for practicing guitar. Sit toward the front of the bench â€" this will help your posture. Keep in mind, after you have a good handle on using proper technique, your sitting position will not be as critical for performing simple guitar parts or songs. However, when you perform more difficult pieces, youll need to be in a proper sitting position. Many guitarists will sit for difficult pieces: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and of course, classical guitarists such as John Williams are usually seated when playing difficult guitar pieces. Next, if you are a right-handed guitarist, place the guitar on your left leg. Left-handed guitarists, place your guitar on your right leg. After the guitar is in place, angle the guitar neck slightly upward, approximately 45 degrees (everyone is different and the angle must suit your body size and shape). Next, try playing a few musical phrases to check the comfort level of the position. Adjust the guitar angle to the natural and relaxed position of your hand, which typically angles slightly upward. This placement of your guitar is for electric and acoustic guitars.   Positioning the guitar in this manner provides the least strain on your hands and body. Here is an example of proper guitar position demonstrated by one of my young students: Now that you are in position, let’s begin by focusing on the position of your left hand. First, you should press with the ball of your thumb on the center of the guitar neck. Your thumb position will change for different styles, pieces of music, and even sections of songs. However, to begin this adventure into correcting guitar technique, press from the ball of your thumb onto the center of the back of the guitar neck. With your thumb in position, extend your fingers forward and take a look at your left hand in the mirror â€" it should create a flat surface that is almost parallel to the plane created by the bottom of the guitar neck. Now, to prepare for a simple, yet very good left-hand exercise, move your hand position to the fifth fret and place your first finger on the “C” note on the fifth fret of the third string. Keep your first finger depressed while you place your second finger on the sixth fret of the third string, which is a “Db” note. Next, keep both your first and second fingers depressed while you place your fourth finger on the eighth fret of the third string, which is an “Eb” note. Make sure that you press with your fingertips and don’t collapse your joints. Notice how the second finger in the image above incorrectly collapses. You will intentionally collapse the joints of your fingers in many instances, but try to avoid it. Next, well dive into some exercises to try check out part two of the article here! Common App vs. Universal College App Which Should You Use

Common App vs. Universal College App Which Should You Use As if you dont have enough decisions to make as a college applicant, you also need to decide which college application to use. Should you go with the Common Application or the Universal College Application (or apply directly through the university)? Both allow you to create a consolidated submission that contains your demographic information, extracurricular activities, grade point average, and other important information all in one place. Using either application can also save you time and prevent you from writing the same information over and over again. So what is the difference between the two, and which should you use? Consider the following factors when deciding between the Common Application and the Universal College Application. Number of colleges served by the Common App vs. the Universal College App Before you choose which type of application youd like to fill out, be sure to make a list of the schools you are applying to and check which application they accept. [RELATED: 5 Must-Do Steps Before Submitting Your College Application] The Common App is by far the more prevalent application, and can be used at more than 600 schools (many of which are private institutions). While both applications allow students to consolidate their application efforts into a single application, the common application does tend to have a more holistic view. This means the Common Application emphasizes factors beyond a students GPA, like extracurriculars, test scores, and experience. The Universal College Application is a much newer application, meaning that there are fewer schools that accept it. Currently, less than 50 colleges use this application, but this number does include Ivy League schools, including Cornell, Harvard, and Princeton, as well as other reputable private schools. Materials needed for the Common App and Universal College App Along with knowing which applications are accepted by the schools you are applying to, you should also take note of the materials required by the schools, as that could sway which application you want to use. [RELATED: 4 Tips to Manage the College Application Process] The Common App is known for looking at the qualifications of the entire applicant, meaning that supplemental items, like essays and letters of recommendation, are required for the application. The Common App only accepts colleges that share the same broad, holistic admissions process, while the Universal College Application accepts any school that is accredited and follows the National Association for College Admission Counselings ethical guidelines. If the schools you plan on applying to require letters of recommendation and personal essays, you may want to consider using the Common App, as it can streamline this process. However, there may be some items required by the college that are not included in the Common Application. A personal essay is not a required component of the Universal College App; however, many schools will end up requiring them anyway. If a personal essay is required by your prospective school, the UCA does not limit your topics to specific promptswhat each student chooses to write about is open-ended. If the school you are applying to accepts either application, and you have a great topic that you would like to write on or the school doesnt require an essay, you may want to consider using the Universal College Application. Other considerations when choosing between the Common App and Universal College App Each application has a few other bonus features that may be more enticing for applicants. The Common App, for example, has been around for much longer than the Universal College App, meaning that school counselors will have more experience using this type of application and may be in a better position to help you on the Common App if you have questions. [RELATED: The Myths and Truths About Supplemental Essays] On the other hand, the Universal College App opens a month earlier than the Common App, on July 1. If you are looking to get ahead on college applications, this may be a bonus for you. The Universal College App also allows students to link to online content, such as a blog, film project, or a website that youve created. Lastly, the Universal College App interface provides a lot of features that can benefit students, such as the ability to edit your submitted content and an auto-save tool. If you prefer the UCAs user interface, and your prospective schools accept it, consider using the Universal College Application in your admissions.

Why I Volunteer - Fiona Ss Story

Why I Volunteer - Fiona S's Story Meet triple-threat Fiona S: volunteer, tutor, and qualified teacher. Before volunteering at Deptford Green School with Tutorfair, Fiona worked at the school as a secondary maths teacher. We help her tell the rest of her story below. I begin my chat with Fiona by admitting that I don’t know much about her volunteer experience. She kindly fills me in, “I’ve been tutoring at Deptford for probably a year now, after school on Mondays and during lesson time.” I go to scribble this down quickly when she continues, “I also tutored at a local charity in Camberwell [the Southside Young Leaders Academy] for probably six months, supporting talented black boys in the area. Then I volunteered with the On Track Project, teaching maths to students who are at risk of being permanently excluded, probably for another three months.” While I’m amazed at the time and energy Fiona has dedicated to the education of young people, Fiona herself doesn't appear fazed. “It’s just nice to keep my hand inâ€"to keep connected to schoolsâ€"and to teach on my own terms. It’s a system that allows me to give back and not tear my hair out,” she jokes. It’s a system that is easier for many students, too. As a tutor, Fiona is able to focus on those who most benefit from the extra tuition, but she doesn’t make the sessions mandatory. “I really like that balance; you don't have to be there, but if you want that extra help, then come,” she explains. “I think it's very refreshing to have a bit more freedom. It’s more of a choice, and that creates a very different balance between you and the students.” I ask Fiona if she can think of a particularly exceptional tutoring moment that was fostered by this new relationship between her and her students. “Oh, I’ve got loads. I’m just trying to choose one,” she answers easily. “I really like working with small groupsâ€"that's the fun of teachingâ€"and tutoring back at Deptford Green it gave me the opportunity to tutor students that I’d taught before. There was one student who was very disruptive in class, but being able to work with him one on one, he was a completely different child. That’s what I enjoy the most, working with the students who are really difficult in class, but then they get to be treated differently, and show how special they are.” I know I should let Fiona get back to her fantastic work, but I have one more question. Although it doesn’t sound as though she needs another reason to volunteer, I ask her if there is anything she would like to say to someone who is thinking about volunteering. She says, “I’m really interested in working more with children in care, and volunteering allows me to gain more experience with this group of young people. That’s how I feel about volunteering in general: it's just an amazing way to get experience in a sector you want to work in. You get to specialize and it's on your own terms.” We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks, Fiona!
